Rhodium Arabian Stud hosted an Arabian
Horse Youth Seminar at Isola Equestrian Centre in Auckland on 26
to 29th September 2010. Thirteen young equine
enthusiasts attended the clinic, presented by Kate and Doyle
Dertell from Australia. Attendees, ranging from ages 12 to 18
years hailed from all over New Zealand (Christchurch in the
south to Kaitaia in the far north). The youngsters were exposed
to both the ridden- and halter disciplines, as well as all
associated aspects of preparing and showing an Arabian horse.
The seminar consisted of short theory classes in the mornings,
followed by extensive, hands-on practical sessions, with ample
time for leisure, discussion and interaction in the evenings
around the fire. Apart from the practical riding- and in-hand
lessons, basic subjects such as general care of horses (feeding,
rugging, exercising, grooming) were covered and great emphasis
was placed on turnout and the overall show preparation of the
horses. The seminar culminated in a “mini show” on Wednesday,
where the youth got the opportunity to prepare their own horses
from scratch and to then compete in the ring against their
peers. The last item on the agenda was an informal fun finale
between the groups, which included barrel racing and jumping
(horses and humans!) – this was enjoyed immensely by all and the
cheering and laughing during this exercise made the entire camp
worthwhile.
